FlightStats Releases On-time Performance Service Award Finalists and January 2013 Airline/Airport On-time Performance Report

The FlightStats On-time Performance Service Awards recognize operational excellence in air travel around the globe. This year the awards are focusing on airlines exclusively and we are highlighting more regions, networks, and alliances across the world. To determine the finalists, FlightStats examines flight status and arrival data aggregated from global sources including civil aviation authorities, airlines, airports, and major airline reservation systems.

Major International Airlines
Major International airlines on average delivered 78.27% of their flights to the arrival gate within 15 minutes of schedule in January. Cancellations for the group in January were 1.45%. Japan Airlines was the only major international carrier to deliver over 90% of their flights on time. See list of top ten below the following on-time performance graphic.

North American Airlines
North American airlines, on average, delivered 79.21% of their flights to the arrival gate within 15 minutes of schedule in January compared with 72.60% in December. The group had only 1.9% of their flights cancelled.

Delta led the majors again in January. Here’s how the North American major carriers on-time arrival percentages compared:

European Airlines
A mix of major and regional European airlines turned in strong performances in January including Aegean Airlines, NAYASA, Germanwings, Vueling Airlines, and Air One CityLiner. In January half of the top 10 had at least 90% of their flights to the gate on time. The OTP for the group was 80.67% in January, up from 76.62% in December. Cancellations for January were 2.55% for the group.

Asian Airlines
Of the top ten Asian airline on time performers, four delivered greater than 90% of their flights to the gate on-time in January. The average on-time performance rating among the 35 Asian airlines we analyzed in January was 72.15% up slightly from December’s 71.18%. Cancellations for the group were only .59%.

Major International Airports
Though nine North American airports were in the top ten, Tokyo’s Haneda continues to outperform the rest of the world’s busiest airports while posting a 92.62% on-time departure performance in January. The average on-time departure performance among the top 35 international airports in January was 74.73% and cancellations for the group were 1.79%.

North American Airports
HNL Honolulu International Airport took the top spot with 88.03% on-time departure performance in January. The average on-time departure performance for the group in January was 80.31% up 4.28 percentage points from December’s 76.03%. Cancellations for the group were 1.61%.

PMI Palma de Mallorca Airport captured Europe’s top spot with a 91.08% on-time departure performance in January. The average on-time departure performance for the group in January was 71.79%. Cancellations for the group were 2.57%.

ITM Osaka International Airport leads Asian airports with 95.98% on-time departure performance in January. The average on-time departure performance for the group in January was 57.97%. Cancellations for the group were at .71%.
