What is your position at FlightStats?
Senior Software Engineer
What made you interested in what you do?
Actually, I have a degree in biology. When I first graduated from college, I looked for a job doing research in a lab. However, I also took a lot of computer science classes in college and almost picked it up as a double major. I was interested in solving real world problems with computers. I love science in general because it’s very analytical. You need a lot of previous knowledge before you can answer a question or address a problem.
How long have you been working at FlightStats?
20 years. I was hired right after college so this is the only job I’ve ever had.
How has FlightStats evolved since you started?
The company is definitely growing. A long time ago, we were very small and close-knit. It was a big change for us to transition into an agile company. We had to restructure and cut a lot of dependencies. Now that we’ve made that change, our individual product teams have become very close.
What do you like about working at FlightStats?
The company has always allowed employees to determine how they want to accomplish their work, which makes me feel enabled to do what I want to do. I also love the type of employees we hire. We have a certain culture, and I really enjoy the high-quality people I work with. They’re not only high quality in terms of being smart, but they’re also just good people.
What’s the best part of being an engineer at FlightStats?
I think the best part might be that we work as product teams. Most companies will hire a bunch of separate contract engineers to solve a problem. At FlightStats, they give you the problem, your team analyzes the problem, you decide on the solution, and you create it together by taking advantage of each other’s strengths. Everyone has a strong skill or valuable attribute they bring to the team.
What are your hopes for our company?
I think now that we are developing products in both the flight data and trip data domain, I’d like us to merge together. I want the whole company to work on trip data services together. I think there is a lot of opportunity in trips.
What do you do in your free time?
I play basketball often, sometimes 2-3 times per week. Other than that, I mostly spend time with my kids. I like hiking in the summer and jumping in water pools. I like adventure and thrill seeking rides if we happen to go to an amusement park.
Any other fun facts you want to share?
I was born in Zambia. Both my parents are from India, but then they moved to Africa. I grew up in Zimbabwe until we moved to the U.S. when I was 15. I learned to understand Hindi by watching Bollywood movies with my family.
