Flight Intelligence Reduces Risk of Predicted Travel Trouble This Summer
FlightStats releases on time performance numbers for April 2006 and reveals that only uninformed travelers will suffer the grim travel prospects reported by the media
Portland, Ore . May 2006 . Countless stories have been published in the last month about how airline performance is terrible and summer travel will be a "hardship"; how prices are going up and service is going down. It makes one not want to leave home. But a new report and online service from FlightStats, the world's leading provider of flight tracking and predictive flight ratings, may help you venture forth this summer. FlightStats.com is a free consumer site that can show any traveler how to find exceptional service from the airlines and get better value for their travel dollar even when the going gets tough.
The FlightStats Monthly Carrier Performance report, released today, presents actual on-time and delayed flight information for each of the top 40 carriers in the US for April 2006 (http://www.flightstats.com/go/Home/USCarrierArrivalPerformanceReport-April2006.pdf). The report shows some outstanding performance from US air service providers. These 40 carriers overall delivered 79.3% of all flights on-time in April with an average delay of 49 minutes, and a 1% cancellation rate. This is a reduction of both the frequency and severity of delays compared to March (78.4% on-time, 51 minute average delay, 1.8% cancellations).
Topping the list for on-time arrivals among continental US carriers for the second month in a row is NorthWest Airlink, at 89% on-time (with a 52 minute average delay). Commutair is next with 88.9% on- time and only 38 minutes average delay, moving up nearly twenty ranking positions in just two months. As for the largest US carriers, Delta is 13th in April and Northwest is 15th. Southwest, who has dropped in ranking each of the last four months, is 20th most timely in April.
The trend of any carrier's performance ranking is as telling as the specific monthly numbers. The greatest improvements in rank in 2006 include Commutair (up 29 spots to 3rd), Mesaba Aviation (up 29 places to 9th), and Horizon Air (up 28 spots to 6th). The biggest drops in 2006 are Aloha Airlines (down 29 spots to 31st), Continental (down 24 spots to 38th), and ATA (down 24 places to 40th).
Some of the reported air travel challenges are undeniably true. Airlines have cut capacity to save fuel, and to increase the yield on each flight. According to the FlightStats April report, the total number of scheduled flights dropped 4% compared to March. High load factors on planes (and frequent overbooking) mean that if you happen to miss a connection because your connecting flight was delayed, the airline will have a much harder time finding a vacant seat on a later flight to keep you moving. Cancelled flights are even harder to manage.
So, it's not that FlightStats contests the reported facts, merely the conclusions. "When the going gets tough, travelers need to get smarter," says Jeff Kennedy, CEO of Conducive Technology, the makers of FlightStats. What can travelers do to make their travel less trying? The recently redesigned www.flightstats.com site offers unique ratings that will tell you what flights are habitually delayed or cancelled. "There really is a difference between flights on a route, even on the same carrier" Kennedy continues. "I don't know why anyone would fly blind in this current air travel environment when free tools can help them buy and travel smarter."
