Portland, Ore., USA - October 8, 2007 - With the end of the peak summer travel season, the airline industry provided travelers some much needed relief from the dismal days of summer travel. With fewer passengers and fewer flights jamming the system we saw some notable improvements in on-time airline performance.

Good News for US Travelers:

• Overall on-time performance was over 81% among US major carriers compared to only 72% in August '07 and just over 76% one year ago (Sept. '06)
• Fewer flights were late by 30 minutes or more - just under 10% in Sept. '07 vs. 16.5% in August '07 and 13.2% in Sept. '06.
• Cancellations were down to 9884 in September this year compared to 16,108 in August and 10,448 a year ago.
• Delta, United and Northwest all showed big improvements in their on-time arrival performance when compared to August (+11.3%, +13%, and +7.5% respectively).
• Hawaiian and Aloha Airlines led the pack. Both achieved greater than 90% on-time performance. PSA, Frontier, Spirit, Southwest, Continental, and Jet Blue followed, all with better than 85% on-time stats.

On the other hand:

• Horizon saw its cancellation rate soar from 1.16% in August to 6.25% in September.
• Atlantic Southeast Airlines improved its on-time performance over August, but still posted only a 63% on-time rating for September.

North American Airports . the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly:

• George Bush (IAH), Cincinnati/Northern, and Tampa Int'l were the best performing major airports in North America, leading in both on-time departures and arrivals.
• SFO, St. Paul, La Guardia and JFK continued to be trouble spots with 27% or more of their flights arriving more than 15 minutes late. The New York airports both had greater than 10% of their flights arriving more than 44 minutes late.
• Passengers were most likely to experience late departures at La Guardia, Philadelphia and Douglas Airport, each with over 30% of the flights departing more than 15 minutes late. La Guardia and Ronald Reagan National both had greater than 13% of the flights depart more than 44 minutes late.

In Europe:
European carriers brought their passengers to the gate on time approximately 75% of the time in September, a slight improvement over August. Among the majors, Lufthansa, KLM, SAS and Air France led the pack, each achieving higher than 80% on-time arrivals. The overall European average was weighed down by British Airway's 62% rating (up from 56% in August).
