2007 Performance Reports

On-time performance for the year is down while cancellation and excessive delay factors increase at nearly every one of the nation's top airports in 2007

Portland, Ore., USA - January 12, 2008 . FlightStats.com today released its annual reports on US major airport performance for January through December 2007. The FlightStats review of the 28 largest US airports shows a considerable decline in timely flight arrivals compared to the previous year.

4.3 million flights out of 6 million flights arrived on time at the 28 airports representing 71.65% a nearly 5 percentage point drop from 2006 yearly numbers for the same airports. 130,575 (2.16%) of all flights were canceled at the nations largest airports from January 1 through December 31st. Perhaps more significant is that 11.2% of all flights were delayed on arrival by more than 45 minutes. With carriers scheduling connections more tightly, these delays mean many missed connections for scores of travelers with few re accommodation options as planes operate at record capacity.

The best on-time arrival performance for 2007 was at Orlando's MCO (78.49% on time), Phoenix's PHX with 78.17% on time and Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky's CVG with 77.9% on time for the year. Least timely arrivals for the year landed at the three New York metro airports; JFK International (59.78% on-time), Newark's EWR (58.05%) and LaGuardia International LGA (57.62%).

26 of the top 28 airports in the US had worse on-time performance than in 2006 with an average decline in on-time arrivals of 4.69 percentage points. Only Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport and Seattle's SEA-TAC saw an improve in on-time arrivals with ATL up two percentage points to 74.25% on time arrivals and SEA up nearly 1 point to 73.39% on time for the year.

Cancellations also rose in 2007 at a majority of the nation's airports. Twenty of the top 28 airports experienced more canceled arrivals than in the previous year. The largest increase in percentage of canceled arriving flights was at Minneapolis/St Paul (MSP) with 1.62 percentage point increase than in 2006, JFK had a canceled flight rate 1.47 points higher than last year and the Dallas/FortWorth (DFW) cancellation rate was 2.37 percentage points higher than in 2006.

The excessively delayed flights (more than 45 minutes late on arrival) that can create as much inconvenience for travelers as a cancellation in a tightly scheduled system increased at a number of airports. Of all the airports in the report, ATL and PHL are the only ones with a slightly reduced factors of excessive delay with drops of 2.3 and .63 percentage points, respectively. Every other airport had higher factors of excessive delays in 07 than 06. Newark's EWR increased from 17.39% to 21.95% excessively delayed arrivals in 07. JFK increased from 13.17% in 06 to 17.40% last year. PIT jumped from 6.4% to 10.93% and MSP saw an increase from a competitive 5.34% on 06 to 9.74% in 2007
