FlightStats Launches Industry-First Airport Portal, Connecting Airports with Mobile Passengers
FlightStats, the industry-leading publisher of airport and flight information, today announced a new service that promises to change the way airports communicate with their travelers. The FlightStats Airport Portal connects airport operations staff to FlightStats’ data and messaging platforms, enabling airports to achieve three important goals:
- Connect with passengers – notify potentially affected passengers of critical operations information (delays, closures, construction, security issues, traffic, weather problems, parking capacity, etc.)
- Publish flight information – make real-time adjustments to the data published by FlightStats
- Improve operational awareness – monitor flight status and operations in real time
Connecting with Passengers
Airports have been searching for methods to improve passenger service by publishing airport status, service information and events via social networks such as Twitter and Facebook. Unfortunately, messages published via these social networks typically reach only a tiny subset of their passengers – those who subscribe to airport Twitter or Facebook streams.
The new FlightStats Airport Portal provides the ability for airport operations staff to publish information into FlightStats’ new TripTalk™ messaging platform with sophisticated targeting options capable of reaching a select group or millions of travelers worldwide. Once published into the TripTalk information stream, critical messages, notices and other information are pushed to FlightStats.com and mobile.flightstats.com with an option to publish to Facebook and Twitter. FlightStats will soon launch the ability to distribute TripTalk messages simultaneously through a wide array of channels, including:
- Airport websites
- Leading mobile travel applications (across multiple platforms: iPhone, Android, Blackberry, etc.)
- Travel management company (TMC) and agency software and tools
- Major search engines
- Partner websites that publish information from FlightStats
- Location-based services providers
- Major media outlets
- Thousands of customers leveraging FlightStats website widgets and API data feeds
TripTalk messages are contextual, appearing when a traveler or agent checks the status of a flight, views an itinerary, or visits an airport information page. Using this targeted, contextual approach, critical messages don’t get lost in an email in-box or annoy travelers with intrusive text messages.
Publishing Flight Information
The FlightStats Airport Portal enables airport staff to modify and augment the data that FlightStats publishes about flights at their airports. This includes the ability to assign or modify baggage and gate information and to adjust/update flight status information. This updated information is then published to the FlightStats data stream for distribution across Web properties and the FlightStats developer network. When airports publish and manage their data in this manner, it ensures that passengers will get the latest, most complete and accurate information no matter what method a passenger uses for flight and airport information – mobile applications, travel websites, or flight alert messaging.
Bolstering an airport’s flight information, the Airport Portal also provides a comprehensive set of operational data showing what is happening right now at the airport, the day’s record of on-time performance by airline, cancellations and more. Operations staff can also check the status of operations at other airports, providing visibility into problems that may affect their own operations. For example, staff at Indianapolis Int’l Airport could potentially monitor operations at O’Hare and thus be able to detect problems early for flights connecting those two airports.
Qualified airport operations personnel can use the FlightStats Airport Portal free of charge.
Detroit Metropolitan Airport was one of the first airports in the country to recognize the unique capabilities of the FlightStats Airport Portal.
“There are hundreds of issues every day that could improve our customer experience and operational efficiency if we can communicate relevant information to people before they arrive at the airport.” said Scott Wintner, Public Affairs, Wayne County Airport Authority (Detroit Metropolitan Airport). “FlightStats already has the distribution and targeting capability to get critical airport information to millions of travelers via many of the travel tools customers are already using.”
“FlightStats is committed to partnering with airports to improve passenger service by delivering accurate information to passengers at the critical time and place,” said Jeff Kennedy, CEO of Conducive Technology Corp. and creator of FlightStats. “Our new portal and publishing platform complement established social media channels and give airports the reach they need to keep their passengers informed,” he added.
The FlightStats Airport Portal will be on display and available for demonstration at the Airport Council International show in Pittsburg, PA, Sept 26th through the 29th at booth 328. Attendees are invited to come see this groundbreaking new technology that is sure to change the way that airports manage and communicate key information to their passengers and other stakeholders.
