What is your position at FlightStats?

Senior Software Engineer and Technical Lead

What made you interested in what you do?

I have always been interested in science and technology. In college, I was lucky enough to get an opportunity to transition from being a lab assistant to being a software developer. I quickly realized I really enjoyed using computer technology to solve problems.

How long have you been working at FlightStats?

6 years

How has FlightStats evolved since you started?

We have more than doubled in size since I started working here and the culture is much more open and flexible. It’s been interesting to watch our technology achieve greater efficiency over time. For example, one of the first projects I worked on needed to use flight data, and it took a long time to get access to the data. There were even some proprietary feelings about that data. It ended up taking over a week and it wasn’t the level of quality we wanted. Now, we are able to deliver the same data much faster and it’s significantly better quality.

What do you like about working at FlightStats?

The company is structured in a way that allows seamless communication between teams. For example, if I’m working on a project that another team is responsible for, I can easily reach out to the members on that team to get the information I need. Also, the paid time off policy has also been really wonderful. Working in an environment with this level of communication and flexibility actually makes everyone more productive.

What’s the best part of being a developer/engineer at FlightStats?

It’s nice to work in small teams that have a lot of autonomy in how they approach a solution. The company is very open to new technology and new processes for solving problems.

What are your hopes for our company?

I hope our company maintains the same flexibility and culture that we’ve established here. It’s really exciting for my team to join forces with FlightGlobal because the resources we get from them will open up a lot of new opportunities.

What do you do in your free time?

I recently purchased a 20 acre farm in the Columbia River Gorge and I enjoy going out there to work and relax.  We have been planting flowers and fruit trees. A big project will be restoring the original farmhouse.

Any other fun facts you want to share?

I have been growing my beard for 8 years. I still enjoy having it; however, people have started stopping me on the street to ask if I’m Nat Borchers from the Portland Timbers. My soccer skills are not quite good enough to fake it.
